Solway Credit Union is in the process of expanding its School’s strategy to do just that. This entails forging stronger links with local schools to engage and encourage youngsters (from primary age upwards) to start saving money, in a bid to prevent them falling into the debt trap later in life, or indeed to prevent them solving any debt issues by going to high interest lenders.
As part of the Scottish ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ initiative, youngsters are encouraged to work in partnership with the credit union, to start saving small, regular amounts to help them build a healthy financial future. In addition, parents and school staff could also join and set up dedicated savings accounts to help with specific expenses such as school uniform, school trips or even study books. But it is not only about saving money, it is also about improving their financial knowledge through the ‘hands on’ experience of managing money. In addition to honing their money management skills, youngsters benefit from the fantastic opportunity to learn more about team building, confidence and leadership skills.
If your school is located within our common bond area of Annandale & Eskdale, Nithsdale or the Stewartry, then get in touch to see how we can help. Our contact details can be found at the top of the page, or use Contact Us – we look forward to hearing from you.
